normative

A "norm" is "a standard, model, or pattern regarded as typical" (American Heritage English Dictionary). A process is said to be "normative" when it results in bringing atypical patterns in line with typical ones. Socialization, for example, is often a normative process, as it involves bringing social pressures to bear on behavior that is considered unusual.
